“Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers.”
- Isaac Asimov
English includes both Composition and Mechanics of Grammar. The program in writing strives to enhance students’ abilities to think logically on paper, to present and develop ideas convincingly, and to view their lives and emotions as worth recording. In the course of a year there are opportunities for students to produce narratives, poetry, descriptions, correspondence, and expository pieces. By the time students are in the upper grades they learn how to master opinion and persuasive pieces as well. Teachers work collaboratively to build a cumulative program. The grammar component helps young writers to communicate what they have to say without errors, and this allows them to have a more accepting and appreciative audience. Students also discover that knowing grammar in English helps them in their study of Spanish or of any other language as they move on to middle school.
