“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
- Richard Steele
First graders at Carlthorp School are pros at the ins and outs of how the school works. Within the first few weeks, classroom walls are arrayed with original illustrated stories. Art projects help define the year, both within the classroom and in the Art Room.
The children develop math skills as a class and reading skills in small groups with our Reading Specialists. What began as “News” in Kindergarten becomes “Sharing” in the first grade, and children are encouraged to be comfortable speaking in front of their classmates and teachers.
The students learn about communities near and far, as well as past and present. One of their favorite activities is our memorable Thanksgiving Celebration. The children not only become familiar with the Wampanoags and Pilgrims; they also play traditional games, present authentic handmade projects, and prepare their own feast.
Special events like the First Grade Parents’ Breakfasts give children the opportunity to display what they have learned to their parents.
