“Where words fail, music speaks.”
– Hans Christian Andersen

Music – The strength of the music program derives from the students’ acquisition of knowledge that increases youngsters’ awareness and appreciation of this fine art. Students also learn to appreciate a variety of musical styles and become aware of the resources available in their own communities.

Music begins in kindergarten and continues through Grade 6.  In the early grades the emphasis is on creative enjoyment and exposure.  By the time our students graduate, however, they will have learned about a variety of vocal and instrumental musical styles, music history, basic music theory, and the instruments of the orchestra.

The music curriculum also enriches regular classroom programs.  For instance, fourth graders study American folk songs, specifically those that deal with our state’s history.  In the spring this unit culminates in a performance in which each fourth grader portrays someone from California’s history, and these sketches are interspersed with songs and dances.
