The Lion King, Jr. Is a Roaring Success!

The words “Hakuna Matata!” were heard throughout the Carlthorp School campus for weeks as 54 student thespians, all members of the after school Carlthorp Theater Ensemble program prepared for the big performance of The Lion King, Jr.  The weeks of voice, acting and dancing preparation paid off as hundreds of guests clapped along to the sounds of students in grades 1-6 gleefully delivering a spectacular rendition of The Lion King, Jr.

The father of a 2nd grade student gushed, “My cheeks hurt from smiling so much. I was overwhelmed by the confidence with which all the students, whether in 1st grade or in 6th grade, performed their parts. Bravo, Carlthorp Theater Ensemble!”

Students not only performed for parents and guests in two evening performances, but also treated their fellow classmates to a performance one afternoon at school. The Lion King, Jr. was the first performance that incorporated a student orchestra pit including conventional instruments like bass, keyboard, and violin as well as music made with wine glasses. The musicians worked together with the performers to create an atmosphere of collaboration and the result was nothing short of spectacular.

“We are so proud of all the students who were involved in The Lion King, Jr.,” stated Tim Kusserow, Head of School. “Whether embracing a lead role, participating in the ensemble cast, creating the sets, setting the mood on the tech crew, or performing in the orchestra pit, every student contributed to the success of this production. What is particularly meaningful is watching our older students mentor the younger ones and the bonds of friendship that are established from this experience.
