Throughout the school year the Carlthorp School librarians invite children’s authors and illustrators to speak to students about their craft and answer questions about what inspires them to write. Recently, Stuart Gibbs, author of the "FunJungle" series, the "Spy School" series, the "Moon Base Alpha" series, the "Last Musketeer" series, and the "Charlie Thorne" series joined us to speak to our 3rd - 6th Grade students.
Stuart inspired our students to follow their dreams and he outlined not only his path to becoming an author, but also the inspiration behind the themes for his five different book series. Reflecting on his presentation, Cayden D., a 5th Grade student wrote, “Mr. Gibbs talked about all his ideas for his book series. He used to be a field biologist, which motivated him to write the "FunJungle" series...After the "FunJungle" series, Stuart Gibbs wanted to write more books. He had a college friend who was an astronaut. This gave him the idea to write a novel about space. The "Moon Base Alpha" series takes place in 2041, and its plot is about a kid who lives on the moon and solves mysteries that occur on the moon.”
Cayden concluded, “Stuart Gibbs taught everyone that if they stick with a dream, they can achieve almost anything. He taught us that he has wanted to be an author from a very young age and stuck with that dream and he made his dream come true.”
In addition to Stuart Gibbs, this school year students have been inspired by Nadine Levitt, author of Inside Me Lives a Village! and Tad Hills, author of the "Rocket" series, the "Duck & Goose" series and various other board books. Our students are looking forward to an upcoming visit from Kathleen Young, author of The Pumpkin War and parent of two Carlthorp School alumni. We are so grateful to all these authors for sharing their perspective with our students and motivating them to follow their dreams.
