1st Grade Thanksgiving Food Drive

Our 1st grade students participated in a meaningful Service Learning project this holiday season. The students were involved in all aspects of the all-school Thanksgiving Food Drive.
They were empowered to make decisions about what foods the school should collect and then logged the items each day on a spreadsheet. They also planned and delivered announcements at Flag Line and promoted the drive during carpool line in the mornings. Not only did they learn new skills, but they also took great pride in what they achieved. It was very important to them to know that their hard work was helping others in need. Following the drive, students completed written reflections, some of which are shared below. Bravo, 1st grade. We are very proud of your hard work!

The students in 1st-grade are very grateful to the Carlthorp community for the tremendous support of their Thanksgiving Food Drive which benefited low-income families from the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica. They surpassed their target of 30 gift boxes of food items plus a $30 grocery store gift card and were able to fill 40 gift boxes with food plus a $50 store card. All 1st grade students also wrote a meaningful note to include in each Thanksgiving box, and 1st grade parents joined the students to assemble the boxes.
